How does satellite phones work?Your satellite handset transmits a signal to the nearest satellite. The satellite amplifies the signal and sends it to a ground station. The ground station routes the call to its destination, be it another satellite phone, a landline, or even a cell phone.

Do satellite phones work everywhere?They can work in most geographic locations on the Earth's surface, as long as open sky and the line-of-sight between the phone and the satellite are provided. Depending on the architecture of a particular system, coverage may include the entire Earth or only specific regions.
